Florida: rescues don't starve horses.

Don't rescue what you can't care for.

When do you say, no more?

How can you help animals if you are homeless?

Woman’s tragedy leaves need to find homes for dozens of horses [link]
...on July 25, the home she shared with her mother burned to the ground. All four of her dogs died in the fire, and 10 of her 15 cats were lost. The fire was ruled accidental ...the stove had a tendency to turn on by itself. It was something on her list of things to fix when she could afford it, once she caught up on her mortgage payments, car payments and a multitude of other costs she had been putting off in favor of feeding the animals. The woman who lives to rescue abandoned and forsaken animals needs a little rescuing herself. Before her home burned down, it was the mere cost of horse feed that led her to despair. Prices have more than doubled during the past year. She is looking now to adopt out the majority of her horses—about three-quarters of them, she said. Many are underweight, but they are all healthy and receiving proper veterinary care. Ciancaglini estimates she was spending $3,000 to $4,000 a week on horse feed for all 65 horses. “It’s killing me to have to do this,” she said. “But, I’d rather do this than have them starve.”

I hate to say it, but this is probably a good example of someone who should NOT be rescuing horses. You don't just wake up one day with 65 to feed. You have to know your limitations, and turn down horses you can't afford to care for.

People all over the country are currently facing criminal charges for having animals in the condition that I saw in the news video. They are beyond skinny or underweight.

Okay, seriously. There is underweight, and there is starving. But somewhere inbetween is malnourished, and that is what many of these horses in the video are (and were before the fire) ...

Hoarding is not the same as rescuing.

Rescuing is NOT letting the mares get knocked up and making more foals!!

From the article:

Yes, there is much, much more to the story. When our economic status was so much better these starving horses would have been snatched up and she would have been charged with animal abuse, but honestly our county animal control does not have the funds to feed, vet, and adopt out all these horses. Yes, Tina loves her horses and animals dearly and we all get over our head and hope things will get better. I just wish she would have done something a little sooner. I will bite my tongue on why there are so many, but several stallions + several mares = a whole lot of babies that grow up to be big horses and have babies of there own. Get the picture?

This is a sad story, however, when Tina could not afford to feed and vet so many animals she should have tried to find homes for them.. The pictures show horses that are too thin!Dirty living conditions! These are not happy, healthy animals. Hording, too much of anything is a sickness, and can be treated. Hording fills a need for something lacking in ones life. Tina has not been doing the humane thing for these animals. These animals should be removed from her property, and Tina should get her own life happy and healthy.

Chief04, I bit my tongue when you posted about the house fire on what you said about the horses. I can't bite my tongue now with this comment. Complete irresponsible horse ownership is what this is called. Don't ONE MINUTE blame animal control for not able to take in these horses. 60+ horses DID NOT come overnight. I am so sorry but the horse community in the surrounding area is furious over this. The babies will now be stunted in growth due to lack of proper care/nutrition as babies. There are and will be health issues for all these horses. Yes, the economy is bad and we all feel it. BUT, like I said, 60+ horses did not appear over night and Tina needed to do something long ago. She is to blame on this completely and should be charged with some form of neglect.

From the article:

I THINK ALL OF YOU ARE SO PATHEDIC THAT YOU HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO WITH YOUR LIVES THAN VERBALLY ATTACK PEOPLE WHEN THEY ARE DOWN.OF COARSE NO ONE KNOWS THE WHOLE STORY EXCEPT FOR THE FAMILY AND PEOPLE INVOLVED BUT ALL OF YOU DECIDE TO SPEND YOUR DAYS SPEAKING NEGATIVELY ABOUT A SITUATION YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT. THE GIRLS DID A GOOD JOB ON THE STORY BUT OF COARSE DID NOT HIT EVERYTHING THE CIANGALINI'S HAVE BEEN THROUGH. WHY DON'T ALL OF YOU DO YOUR SELVES A FAVOR AND GO GET A LIFE OR BETTER YET GET UP AND HELP. YOU GUYS WANT TO SAY THAT THESE HORSES ARE NOT HEALYTHY EVEN THOUGH ANIMAL CONTROL WAS THERE SAYING THAT THEY ARE. CAN YOU READ??? BEFORE BASHING A 50 AND 80 YEAR OLD WOMEN MAYBE TAKE A SECOND AND THINK ABOUT HOW YOUR COMMENTS MAY BE ADDING TO THE HEARTBREAK OF THE SITUATION. THEY ARE JUST UNCALLED FOR. I FEEL LIKE I AM SPEAKING TO A BUNCH OF 5 YEAR OLD'S... IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANYTHING NICE TO SAY OR CAN'T LEND A HELPING HAND THAN DON'T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL. THEY LOST THEIR HOME,ANIMALS AND EVRYTHING THEY HAD... WHY ISN'T ANYONE SAYING ANYTHING ABOUT THE PITBULL ATTACKING THE HORSES THAT SOMEONE IS LETTING ROAM FREE??? LIKE I SAID GO GET A LIFE AND LEAVE THIS FAMILY ALONE. IF ANY OF YOU PUT HALF THE EFFORT INTO HELPING THAT YOU DO INTO BLOGGING ABOUT THINGS YOU DON'T KNOW YOU MAY FIND YOU WILL HAVE A MORE PEACEFUL LIFE. THE PROBLEM WITH THE WORLD TODAY IS PEOPLE LIKE YOU.... SO PLEASE I AM BEGGING YOU FIND SOMEONE ELSE TO BOTHER. STOP BEING SO IGNORENT AND REALIZE YOU KNOW JACK AND HAVE NO RIGHT TO SAY ANYTHING. AND THE INSURANCE ISSUE WHEN YOUR HUSBAND DIES AND YOU HAVE NO OTHER INCOME BUT YOUR SSI, YOU HAVE TO MAKE CERTAIN SACRAFICES... JEAN NEEDED TO HAVE A REASON TO STILL WAKE UP IN THE MORNING AND LIVE... THAT REASON BEING HER BABBIES, SO IF YOUR CHOICE IS INSURANCE OR FEEDING THE BABIES WELL THEN I WOULD DO THE SAME. BESIDES THE FACT THAT THE ECONOMEY IS HORRIBLE AND THE INSURANCE COSTED MORE A YEAR THAN THE OLD TRAILER WAS WORTH, BUT YOU WOULDN'T KNOW THAT EITHER. SO BY ALL MEANS IF YOU DON'T WANT TO HELP THEN PLEASE GO FIND SOMEONE ELSE TO CRITISIZE... ALL YOU GUYS ARE SO BEYOND PATHEDIC I FEEL WORSE FOR YOU AND THE FACT THAT YOU ARE WHO YOU ARE AND HAVE TO LOOK AT YOURSELF IN THE MIRROR EVERYDAY THAN I DO FOR HER. AT LEAST SHE IS SURROUNDED BY THE ONES SHE LOVES AND WHO LOVE HER. AND OF COARSE ALL THEIR BABIES....
